Wonderful essay Sydney and an excellent reminder of the importance of timing. I love how you connect that with the Alewives and sea-run fish. I had never heard that term before and like the analogy of waiting and timing with nothing assured of the next moment.

Thanks so much, Neil! Although I was familiar with salmon runs from living in the PNW, sea-run fish was a new term to me here in Maine, too - we have Rainbow Smelt and Alewife runs in our local area. Fascinating stuff with loads of history.

Nicely done, Sydney! And the gorgeous wave pictures would have been nice for my recent wave essay haha.

I'm presently writing an essay about how I got my bachelor's degree at 52. I guess I was waiting in the pool for a while!!

Thanks, Don! Just waiting for the tide to rise 🤣

I've been thinking about our human perspective on the fish waiting in the pool for the tide to come in. We know that the tide will come in and when, and we can see that if the fish can just wait, things will get better.

But when I'm the fish in the pool, I lack that perspective on my own experience, and waiting becomes second-guessing, worrying, and flailing. It's really helpful to be reminded that sometimes waiting is actually the thing.

Such a great point, Sarah! We are omniscient to the fish, but within our own limited perspective, we are the fish! Then it all comes to a level of faith and trust - which in the fish, we observe as instinct. Wild how the threads all weave together :)

Lovely! It makes me look forward even more to watching the salmon run by my home.

Yay, such excitement! Do you see the eagles hunt there, as well?

I just got back from watching the salmon run by my home. One big fish made it! What a joy it was to see! Not too many birds on this visit.

I learn so much from you. Like Neil I had never heard that term “sea-run fish.” I do love a good vocab term. Lovely thoughts on the benefits of waiting for the right time too. And of course, the images are gorgeous!

Thanks so much, Laura! Same, I am such a vocab nerd 🤣 I'm so happy to share the little things I discover - the world is so big, if we each just share our own little corner, we can learn an awful lot!💕

You have a gift for words.

"place where the river dives down a rocky cliff."

"Perhaps there is no way out, no next leap."

"We’ve all got lots of things to do. But sometimes, waiting is the thing." Nice ending

And your water photos are celestial.

Sydney, you have no idea just how timely this is for me right now as I'm facing a two month gap for some important personal information to arrive. Thanks a million! And your photography is beautiful, as always! It's always time to enjoy the play of light on water...

Maine has such wild water—I just discovered there are 8 spots with reversing falls; the one in Pembroke is sorta in your neck of the woods. Such a fascinating phenomenon!

It really is incredible. The reversing falls in Pembroke is one of our favorite visits! There's a nice beach there, as well, and my son found so many cool fossils.💕
