Beach Portraits is a collection of photography from beaches across the U.S., all celebrating that singular magic that unfolds at land’s end…

There’s just something about a day at the beach, a day that is somehow full of all of life’s complications and contradictions reduced to simplest terms and floated away on gentle breezes.

Waves lap at the shore, rays of sunshine carry salt spray and echoes of laughter. The world stretches endlessly to the horizon but draws as near as the grains of sand at your fingertips.

Living near the Maine coast, beach days hold an affectionate place in our family’s heart. The Maine coast is a famously squiggly line, full of nooks and coves and points, tiny islands trailing breadcrumbs nearly within reach. Granite shores, pebble shores, sandy shores, towering storms, and mirror-flat mornings. Endlessly varied, but always comfortably familiar, always just a little bit like going home.

So it’s no surprise that I found myself weaving strands of salty air into tumbling verse, and gathering up portraits of sea and sand and salt and sun from all the beach-y corners of my memories, a tribute to land’s end, and all the wonder of a day at the beach!

I curate these coffee-table-style portrait books as a timeless way to softly contemplate the beauty of the natural world all around us, all the time. Something to return to again and again, images and poetry drifting and tumbling throughout memories and warm imagination. Something to be left out on a coffee table or propped up on a nightstand or carried out to the beach for a light read.
