Holding the Light
nature holds light in all kinds of fascinating and beautiful ways, helping us reflect on what it means for us to hold light, too

In times of darkness, what could be more natural than to find yourself contemplating the qualities of light?
Different elements of nature hold light differently, becoming a sort of guided meditation to help us reflect on the many ways that we can hold light differently in our lives, too.
Sea creatures hold light like mystery, tucked away protectively in hidden spaces that you would never expect light to even reach, cherished most profoundly where it stretches to the furthest edges of its domain.
Leaves hold light like life, a constant conversion, energy flowing in from the environment, energy flowing out to every root and tip and branch and leaf and bud and seed, light written into living and breathing and growing and dying - and new life starting all over again.
Sea glass holds light like treasure, pulling it all inside the shelter of firm boundaries, folding it into a stronghold, safe and bright and clear, shining like a beacon for every eye that passes.
Feathers hold light like a journey, ever in motion from point A to point B, collecting memories in photon form and weaving them into stories written across endless skies and boundless horizons and journeys of millions of miles, each begun with a single wingbeat.
Water holds light like motion, electric energy that rolls and tumbles and twists and turns, ever chasing the whims of wind and warmth and gravity, whose nearest approach to stillness is the vibrating hum that resonates a background chord for the orchestra of life.
Reflections hold light like memory, the whole world etched into a surface for contemplation, to look deep and deeper still, to be pulled into a moment outside of time, and wander there inside discovery.
The wild creatures hold light like warmth, living, breathing, sleeping, waking warmth. You can feel it just by looking at it, light mapping visual perceptions straight into emotional experiences via one warm-hearted neighbor connecting with another.
Flower petals hold light like soul, gathering in every spark, making it their own, sharing it back into a waiting world, each one its own unique display, each one its own precious mark.
Dandelions hold light like faith, delicate in form, but single-minded in certainty of purpose, radiating in all directions and every color of the rainbow.
The moon holds light like hope. Reflected light, redirected through darkest skies, a promise that beyond the vast expanse of blackness, the light remains, endures - and will be back again, soon.
Wishing you light in the days to come, in all the many ways that you hold it.
